Cultivate the Joy of Reading
Scholars enrolled with Nashville Freedom Schools experience the award-winning Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC) developed by the Children's Defense Fund (CDF). By providing rich, culturally relevant high-quality books that deepen children’s understanding of themselves and all they have in common with others in a multiracial, multicultural democratic society, our scholars gain a sense of connection to the books they read, which fosters a love of reading.
•In 2024, 89% of children enrolled in Nashville Freedom Schools either avoided summer learning loss or gained an average of nine months in their reading levels.
•In addition, CDF Freedom Schools scholars nationwide developed social and emotional intelligence in the following areas: self-awareness (94% of scholars), self-management (75% of scholars), social awareness (91% of scholars), relationship skills (66% of scholars), and responsible decision making (77% of scholars).
